Apprenticeships are topics which are rarely discussed in school, with university being the main focus. However, they are great opportunities and definitely something to consider when looking into future pathways for yourself. But, what really are apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are work-based pathways, gaining a qualification and combining a full-time job with studying. They usually consist of 80% work and 20% studying, and you apply through the employer as opposed to UCAS for universities. Many different industries offer apprenticeships, which is why it is so important to research into different routes available for post sixth form.
There are many different types and levels of apprenticeships too, which depend on how much further you want to study and learn, as well as if you want to work your way up in the industry. Each offer different wages and opportunities, meaning it is important to do your research and find out which is best for you.
However, an apprenticeship, like university or any other pathway, comes with pros and cons, along with obligations and responsibilities. Whilst you earn good money alongside learning and gaining a qualification, with no student debt, the responsibility of a full-time job can be hard, especially if you have to study in your own time. This can be a massive jump from A-Levels or BTECs, which means you need to weigh up if this is the right course for you. Although it is an incredibly competitive route, and can take a long time to achieve a qualification, apprenticeships help to build employability skills and confidence.
