In January our new ‘Be Instrumental!’ players were formed into a band which we decided to name after the fort in Felixstowe - LANDGUARD BAND was born. We wrote to the fort to let them know and they were excited to hear about the project. I was promptly invited down to the fort for a meeting, the upshot of which was the GALA CONCERT!
Roll on June the 23rd and musicians from Y7-13 were welcomed to rehearse in idyllic sunshine all day and enjoy the excellent acoustics the Parade Ground had to offer. The fort staff could not have been more welcoming sorting out the sound system, staging, chairs and even refreshments! Doors opened early so our modest, but appreciative audience, could enjoy a beverage from the café/bar alongside our open-mic pre-concert feature which allowed more informal performances to get an airing.
Then, as it turned 7:30 and the sun set perfectly on cue behind the fort’s walls we were treated to Ruby (vocals) and Harley’s (guitar) ‘We Will Rock You’ from the ramparts – audience stamping and clapping obligatory of course! There then followed an hour and a half of music including of course our headliners ‘Landguard Band’ who’s marshal sounds ricocheting of the walls was very evocative. Solos from Kobi, Ruby, Jen and Willow went down a storm, as did the ensemble offerings from the drum squad, choir, orchestra, Jazz Band and the Y13 BTEC covers band.
Huge thanks and appreciation to Landguard Fort for supporting the event – look out next June for our second GALA CONCERT and get your tickets early, it promises to be a corker!
