We interviewed Mr Wanner, here are his responses:
1) What was your first ever job? I worked in a call centre for a short while, where I took calls on behalf of other companies. I then spent a few years at a local building society, where I helped with money transactions and advising customers on which savings account(s) or bonds would be best for them to invest in. 2) What three things would you take with you to a desert island? Tricky! I would bring the "His Dark Materials" trilogy as I absolutely love this series of novels and would help with the boredom. On a practical level, I would also bring a water purifier and something to chop wood with. 3) What GCSEs did you take? Art & Design, French, History, Religious Studies, Double Science, Graphic Products (which was a bit like Graphic Design) and of course, English and Maths. 4) If you could do any job for the day what would it be? Prime Minister - it would be a massive undertaking but what a challenge! 5) What advice would you give to anyone who wants to work in your industry? I would say absolutely go for it! There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student learn something new (which you have taught them) in front of your eyes. It's a job where no day is the same and every day positively challenges you. 6) If you could have dinner with a historical figure, who would it be and what would you cook for them? I would have dinner with Alan Turing, the amazing mathematician whose efforts were fundamental to winning the Second World War, and who was terribly mistreated by society later in his life. I would ask him about some of the moral dilemmas he faced during the war, and whether he realised his importance. I would make lasagne - just because I'm good at making it! 7) Who has been the biggest influence on your career? I cannot pinpoint one person, I have had so many positive role models since working in education and have learnt so much from them all. 8) What is your favourite sandwich? I love meatball marinara subways! I also like ham hock sandwiches with onion jam, cheddar cheese, lettuce and mayonnaise, all in a nice seeded bread. 9) What was your favourite and least favourite subject at school? My favourite subject was Maths, followed closely by Art. I loved school and cannot think of any subject at GCSE I didn't like. However, we had to do something called "General Studies" at A level which I didn't particularly like, because the course seemed a bit jumbled together, and it felt as if I wasn't learning anything in any great depth or detail. I'm sure the course is better now! 10) Which three teachers would you choose to enter a singing competition with? Miss Baty (who can dance so would distract from my horrible singing voice), Miss Marsh (who can actually sing) and either Mr Wren or Mr Kaseke (who could play an instrument really loud to also distract from my voice). Thank you to Mr Wanner for finding time for this interview.
