Home Alone 1 vs Home Alone 2

Updated: Jul 15, 2022

Home Alone and Home Alone 2 are both Christmas classics and are the best festive movies in my opinion. Both movies are based around the main character - Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) - facing down the Wet/Sticky Bandits after being left behind by his family. The films are both a mixture of heartwarming moments and slapstick, which prove to be surprisingly a good combination. Just a reminder that this is all my opinion, you are probably bound to disagree with something I say so please do not get your pitchforks out. Instead, get some hot chocolate, get cosy and enjoy.

The Plot of Home Alone

The first Home Alone is quite stark when comparing it to the sequel, but doesn’t mean it lacks in excitement. Kevin gets left behind due to no one noticing him till his family arrive in Paris. While his mum is trying to get back to him, Kevin thinks he wished his family away and does what any kid would do when he is left alone, be immature. Life is good until Kevin notices robbers Harry and Marv come along and try to rob the McCallisters house. Kevin fools them for a couple of days, until the Wet Bandits notice the kid is messing with them. Kevin overhears them saying about robbing the house, so Kevin protects his house with a bunch of traps that are bound to make your stomach churn when you see them. The movie has the subplot with Old Man Marley which sends a good message.

The Plot of Home Alone 2: Lost In New York

With this movie, they kept the structure but took the craziness and dialled it all the way up to 11. This time Kevin does manage to get to the airport, but he follows a man he believes to be his dad and ends up at the Big Apple. So - yet again - he does what any kid would do and goes to a fancy hotel and uses his Dad's credit card to buy all his joy. While under surveillance by the snobbish staff of the plaza, he runs into his mischievous friends who cause some trouble. He once again sets up traps more horrifying than last time and claims victory.

Which One Is Better Though?

Both movies are both amazing in their individual ways but only one can take the number one spot. I believe that would have to go to the original Home Alone, I believe a Christmas movie should have somethings you can relate to and Home Alone does that perfectly. It captures the essence of what a young kid would do with the freedom of being alone at home, although the parents leaving him behind is something you would hope not to relate to. I feel as Home Alone 2 tries to be taken seriously but it's hard with the circumstances of the film. The first Home Alone for me just captures that festive cheer for me.

Which do you prefer: Home Alone 1 or Home Alone 2?
