I was a little late to watching this one, but it was worth the wait. I knew I would enjoy it as it combines the talents of Lin-Manuel Miranda (known for things such as Hamilton) and Stephanie Beatriz, who plays Rosa Diaz in Brooklyn 99, so I went into it with already high expectations. I’d seen a lot of videos about it online and it seemed to be receiving a lot more attention than most Disney films do, particularly on Tiktok, so I decided it had to be time to watch it.
Encanto is a Disney movie about familial conflict and pressure. It manages to include a genuine Columbian setting which makes it very visually appealing due to the bright colours and patterns. It features Mirabel Madrigal who, unlike her family, didn’t receive a magical power. She struggles to see her worth as she can’t support her family the way her siblings and cousins can, but as their magical house starts to crumble, Mirabel is the one to save the family.
I think this film is so popular because each character has something that people can relate to, Mirabel's sisters feel so much pressure to be strong and perfect and Abuela spends years hiding her worry. Not only this but the soundtrack is AMAZING. Every single song has weaved its way into my brain, thanks to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s talents. The story is different and steps away from Disney's usual cliches, as well as each character having a genuine struggle and storyline, rather than it just being the protagonist, while everyone else stays in the background, as well as all the character designs being perfect and suiting the characters, while sticking to the Columbian theme and culture.
Overall, I would definitely recommend Encanto. It’s entertaining for all ages and the storyline is genuinely interesting and it’s all round colourful and fun. I think it does live up to the hype, and it’s unique because not one character is perfect, they all have flaws, stepping away from Disney’s usual fairytale type stories.
