There’s something amazing that’s been happening over the past 5 years, right under our noses! It’s to do with a third of an acre of grassland on the Felixstowe School site that has, slowly, been transforming into a beautiful, productive and reflective space.
This is the story of the Garden Project, which was created after a number of our students wanted to have a positive impact on our local environment. With areas set aside for growing fruit and vegetables, a wildlife pond, a grass labyrinth for reflection, mature and younger trees and areas of colourful planting, there is something for everyone in the Garden Project.
Whether you love the outdoors, whether you want to grow your own food, or whether you just need somewhere quiet to be for a moment, it’s worth a visit.
Our research last year showed that 45% of students wanted to learn more about growing fruit and vegetables, and this is something we learn about during our Garden Club sessions on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes. Regular students also get the first pick of the produce, which last year included pumpkins, courgettes, carrots, onions, rhubarb, sweetcorn and marrows.
Our research found that 47% of students reported their first session in the Garden definitely had a positive impact on their mental health. This is wonderful news! Life can be stressful and pressured, and there are lots of things which cause us to worry and panic. Science is beginning to show us that repeated, extended time engaging with nature, for example, through gardening, is a brilliant way to reduce blood pressure, anxiety, stress, and boost our mood and our memory- even our academic performance!
